Kwahéri Maoré

When I arrived at my Mahorese school, I met several teachers who were in their last year in Mayotte. And universally, they told me that when you're in your last year, you're already at your destination in your mind. One, named Henri Denglades, was going back to his native French Guyana at the end of that school year. From September until the end of the year, he was mentally already there, thinking about how he would see his family again and reclaim his house. Every month of his last school year,... Two Classical Concerts Went To Market...

This week-end and last week-end, there were two concerts. Not the same one repeated but two different ones. The common denominator was the music school director's sister, Odile, who plays first flute in the Avignon orchestra and who sings too. She was in Mayotte on holiday for ten days, so they wanted to show her off as much as possible while she was here. It gave us all someone to talk to while waiting... [Lire la suite]

The Blue Mango Strikes Again

On Friday, the musicians had a party at one musician's house including all musicians and dancers. I think everyone had a good time, there was certainly a lot of dancing going on. On Saturday, we planted ourselves in the middle of the monthly farmer's market to play together. The reason for these photos and festivities involving the Blue Mango was the departure of Laurence, our violinist, who has finished her 4-year contract and who is now on her way to Angoulême, where she will be a... Music in Mayotte

This is the music group I’ve been with for a month so far. The level isn’t brilliant, but we get on well and are happy playing together. The group is called L'Amicale des Bretons de Mayotte. Marion plays the flute, the accordion and the piano. She started off with the piano years ago, went on to the accordion, but when she joined this group, there were already two accordions. She wanted to try a new instrument, they advised her to try the flute or the recorder,... [Lire la suite]
