It's cold outside.

Winter has arrived, the shortest day of the year has come and gone, and it's getting cold outside. This said, being Mayotte, cold is an entirely relative notion. We're not talking sub-zero temperatures and snow. We're talking twenty-five degrees, cool winds and going to the beach in a t-shirt rather than a swimming costume.                 The days are slightly longer now, and the trees... [Lire la suite]

Black and White

Last Friday, we went to a painting exhibition by two artists, one we'd heard of, one we hadn't. Exhibitions are extremely rare in Mayotte, as are any forms of what is pompously described as "culture". No theatre or drama representations, no cinema, very little art of any sort. I didn't go to that many exhibitions in France as it was, but here, there are so few that it's worth getting out of the house to see what's going on.        ... [Lire la suite]

Radio Tour de l'Île ! Infos, quizz, musique, fun !

Over the Pentecost week-end, a friend of ours was participating in the Tour de l'Île, a sailing boat tour of the larger of Mayotte's two islands. He told us that he does this every year, and that he usually ends up being the only one playing music on the beach, so would we like to come and accompany him with another two instruments? Yes please.              Our skipper was our musician friend Franck, who plays the accordion in our... [Lire la suite]

Dziani Dzaha

One really nice thing about Mayotte is that the distances are short, so you don't need to travel for a long time to go anywhere. The beaches are very close to the towns. Our nearest beach can be reached on foot. It's not a terribly nice one, so we usually go to one called Sakouli, on the other side of Mamoudzou. Total distance: about 10km. Total time spent travelling: about half an hour depending on traffic.        ... [Lire la suite]

Stuck in the Mud

There has been so much rain lately that it has severely damaged the road leading down from our flat. Great holes, some up to 50cm in depth, have appeared in the road... which has already blocked more than one car from going up. We had a collection day with the neighbours last week, where we all went a bit further up the road to a stony field, brought some large stones and pieces of roof-tile down and filled up the worst of the holes. The following photos show... [Lire la suite]

Madame, la pluie, elle tombe!

Talk about keeping things for a rainy day. There are so many rainy days here – and so much rain – that I don’t know what to do with most of them. Some do, though. There’s construction work outside at the moment – just underneath our flat, actually – where two workers in bright blue trousers are crépi-ing the car park boundary walls.         Taking shelter for lunch :) ... Water, water everywhere...

I got a call the other day from a girl I’d met at a friend’s birthday party, asking me if I wanted to do something on Sunday. The search was on. She rang me back yesterday evening, having thought of going to the beach, renting a kayak, paddling round a pretty island and fish-watching on the coral reef afterwards. I picked her up this morning and we were off.               ... [Lire la suite]

Christmas Market - R.I.P.

Two hours later, I went to the driving school for two hours of motorbike lessons. It had already started drizzling, so the monitor told two of us that we had better come back another day as the rain looked like holding. It's OK to learn to drive in the rain - especially here, we're going to need to know how to do that - but a soaked track when you're just starting and can't really balance properly yet is not the best idea. Ten minutes later, we heard a huge clap of thunder and the... [Lire la suite]

Good morning all.

A quick hello from underwater, when I went diving with a colleague's husband !
