The rain in Mamoudzou falls down, soaks the road and makes big potholes.

We're slowly getting towards the end of the rainy season. It's been raining pretty much every day, but not all day though, just an hour or two at a time. The rain has - as usual - dug gaping holes in the roads, it's a right mess. Some of the roads I take every day have now reached the state where you can't actually drive on them any more. You swerve all over the place, as you physically cannot drive in a straight line on these roads, and you play bumper cars too, because when one... [Lire la suite]

Going Swimming At School

The rainy season in in full flow now. This is a short video taken by one of my colleagues at school, a day when 9.2mm of rain fell in two hours accompanied by a pounding thunderstorm that made the headmistress decide to cut off the school's electricity because it was getting too dangerous. There are a lot of electric sockets very close to the ground, and most of our electrical wiring isn't protected by anything. As soon as it started raining, the kids ran screaming and shouting into the nearest... [Lire la suite]

Cascade

The Soulou Waterfall, on the west coast of Mayotte, is a place which is renowned for its thefts, break-ins and various attacks of all kinds. Unfortunately, it's also recognized as one of the most beautiful sites on the island. That's why, when a friend wanted to go, she decided to open the outing to three or four of us, saying that it would be even better if we could recruit a few friends each to take along. Which is how the outing started at 3 people and finished at 30, a good... [Lire la suite]

Makis and Turtles

While P was here, we went down to the south of the island to one of the most beautiful (and most touristic, unfortunately) beaches in Mayotte: N'Gouja. Twice. The first time was during the school holidays, the second time was on the Monday when everybody went back to school... and as I don't work on Mondays, we thought the beach wouldn't be too full. It was almost empty, which was nice because most of the time, there are so many people there that you can tell where the turtles are by looking for the... [Lire la suite]

High tide and low fish

The other day, a friend of mine - Mireille, the one I went to the circus with - and I went to the beach. It wasn't a particularly fine day, and the tide was high, but we tried to go to the drop-off anyway and see what we could find.                           We didn't find very much, actually. There was the same quantity of coral and the same number of fish as there always is, but it appears that high tide really... [Lire la suite]

Going to the Circus

The Cirque de Paris has been in Mamoudzou for the last few weeks, and is staying until the 17th of February. The circus tent is planted in the main square of the capital city, with a large Coca-Cola tent in front and the market to the left. Behind is the Tourism Committee building, pink and lavishly decorated with various graffiti. The circus tent, performers and props arrived by container or plane. When the circus opened for its first showing, the organisers were rather disappointed. Kids... [Lire la suite]

It's a hard knock life.

Last Sunday, the music group (as always oh-so-elegantly named The Blue Mango) and I went to a barbecue on the beach, organized by the Bretons of Mayotte. An excuse to get together as much as anything, go swimming, have some fun and have something to eat.                                   And eat we did: mabawas (chicken wings - you know that one by now), chicken and beef kebabs, fried green bananas,... Glass-bottomed boats make the world go round

There are several companies which offer boat trips in and around the lagoon, generally to see whales and dolphins. We'd heard of one which had a boat with a glass bottom, so we put our names down and took our friends out in that for the day.                         We went over coral reefs, we ate local food on a beach called the Prefect's Beach, or plage du préfet, we went to see a... Sea's out.

Last weekend, yet another beautiful day, how tiring ;). School has been back for three weeks, so like every other teacher on the island, we went to the beach. At low tide. Very low tide. So low that we could actually walk right up to the coral reef drop-off, the part where the coral suddenly falls away and you can see a lot of coral and fish. A little hard under the feet, because there were bits of coral and various assorted rocks everywhere, it was a case of finding the least pointy bits to walk on, but... [Lire la suite]

M'lima Choungui

Last Sunday, we did a very touristy and rather stupid thing. We decided to go up the Mount Choungui, known as M'lima Choungui. We'd seen it plenty of times from a distance, we have friends who've gone up it, and it was starting to seem as though everybody had gone up except us. So we dragged a friend into the bargain - Franck, he of the sailing boat, who had taken us out in his boat the week before to try out his new sail. He brought his 15-year-old son, and we all drove down... [Lire la suite]
