Nanny, you probably don't want to know what I did last weekend.

I recently had a couple of acquaintances over. The sort of people who'll give you absolutely no news for a year or so, then suddenly pop up out of the blue saying that they've bought plane tickets to Mayotte and can I put them up. They'd timed their visit to be here at the same time as a friend of theirs, a hiking guide on tour in Mayotte at the time, so they were off with him most of the time, which was fine as far as I was concerned. They didn't have anything planned for the... [Lire la suite]

UNICEF Heroes Day

Yesterday was UNICEF Heroes Day: a worldwide, running-applications-and-various-other-gadgets-connected run whose goal was to raise money to vaccinate children. The idea was to get everybody to run 10 kilometres and connect via various running or fitness-based apps, GPS watches or whatever to the UNICEF Heroes website, thereby tracking all their practice and the run itself. There was no specific time for the run to start: you could do it at any time on that given day, even in... [Lire la suite]

Les Bigoudènes En Folie

It's tyre-racing time.  The Bretons of Mayotte have two teams, one all-female, one all-male. The leader of the Bretons works in the police station and usually manages to rope in a team of policemen/women. He'd managed it last year, and had seemed to manage it this year as well. He'd asked me if I wanted to take part again, and I'd said yes please, and I have a friend who'd like to run as well. He therefore left two spaces in... [Lire la suite]

It's cold outside.

Winter has arrived, the shortest day of the year has come and gone, and it's getting cold outside. This said, being Mayotte, cold is an entirely relative notion. We're not talking sub-zero temperatures and snow. We're talking twenty-five degrees, cool winds and going to the beach in a t-shirt rather than a swimming costume.                 The days are slightly longer now, and the trees... [Lire la suite]

I think you would be horrified if you saw the state your parcels arrived in. That's why they're going on the blog. The packages shown above are presents that Mum, Nanny and Papi sent me, a colourful top and a batch of Economists. The beanies you sent arrived in a sealed envelope with no damage at all, possibly because it was a small package. A box of clothes and books I sent myself in October also arrived feeling rather sorry for itself.... [Lire la suite]

What Not To Wear

Before coming to Mayotte, I’d looked them up in books and on websites, talked to people about them, looked into what was available locally. I’d looked into the materials that went into making them and how said materials would stand the test of time, humidity, dust and daily use. I’d asked about religious customs, what was acceptable and what wasn’t. I’d bought plenty over the Internet and in shops in Poitiers. I felt ready, or if I wasn’t, it’d... [Lire la suite]

Dress codes

At the airport          The traditional dress here is called a salouva, and they have a turban on their head, known as a kishali, often just worn as a scarf over the head. It’s all very colourful, though probably not terribly practical. Salouvas are made from three lengths of material sewn together, basically a long tube of material which is about 1m50 in diameter. Girls and women here wrap themselves in this material, knotting it in front. The salouvas don’t seem to stay up that well, as... [Lire la suite]
