Total Jumbo Strike

There are two big strikes going on at the moment. And being Mayotte, where nothing really ever goes as planned, they're both worth a mention.                                 The first - and bigger - is the Total strike. Total is the one and only petrol provider in Mayotte, the group has a complete monopolis over the island. But the problem doesn't come from Total itself. The problem comes from the Overseas... Striking Teachers.

Before the school holidays, the French authorities started talking about their civil servants. Specifically the civil servants working overseas. As you already know, all French civil servants receive bonuses for working in the French overseas territories such as Mayotte, French Guyana or New Caledonia. These bonuses are calculated according to the civil servant's salary: at the start of your career, you get a 10,000-euro bonus, at the end of your career, you're closer to a 35,000-euro... Striking

There are a few strikes going on at the moment, mostly led by the local health authorities. As we saw with what has come to be known as the révolte des mabawas, or chicken-wing riots, people who go on strike here tend to block the roads and throw stones at anybody who tries to come too near, especially policemen. The current strikes are about statuses. Mahorese health authorities want to have the same civil servant status as their French... [Lire la suite]

Happy New Year to all

P and I spent Christmas and New Year with my favourite people this year. When I got back, I was invited to a friend’s birthday party, where I was informed that I must be crazy to voluntarily spend any length of time in such a cold place when I live in such a warm place. Go back in the summer, by all means, they said, but not in the winter. I actually liked it though. First of all, seeing the family. Secondly, fetching and buying things in France and England in... Photo albums

Underwater photo of anemones and little fish, taken by a colleague's daughter with an underwater camera.            I've just added a photo album to the blog, called "Blue Lagoon". It shows photos of the lagoon, above and under the water, some corals and fish, sandy beaches, water and islands... I'll add more photos to it when I take some, but it'll give you a good idea of Mayotte's surroundings. To get to the photo album, go to the top of the blog and go down the right-hand side.... Sans Queue Ni Tête

A rather eventful morning today, because as it’s been fairly calm for the last 24 hours, I wanted to see if the supermarkets had reopened. Unprepared as always, I saw a great long queue in front of the local Sodifram and decided to join the fray. Again, the supermarket was so full that customers were waiting outside, only allowed inside twenty or so at a time. 9.30 a.m. : Arrived at supermarket and joined a queue of a hundred or so people. Some white, some black. Some waiting patiently in line, some pushing in from the... [Lire la suite]

Opting out

Mad at CRS riot police. This morning, while setting off for school, a colleague rang to say that he'd heard that there weren't any lessons today. Once there, some said that lessons should continue as normal - public service - whereas others said that it was too risky. So far, a 9-year-old boy has lost an eye, courtesy of a gendarme armed with flash-balls, and a 39-year-old man died yesterday while fighting against the police. There was a riot yesterday, which blocked all Mamoudzou (capital) and nearby towns. I was told it was... [Lire la suite]

The Gold Rush

Things have been a little complicated recently. First, the strikes started because of the cost of living here. For example : 4.20€ for a 1kg packet of rice, 2.83€ for three large potatoes and 3.50€ for a packet of butter. "Essential" products here are chicken wings, rice, sand, bottled gas, meat and milk. These were the strikes with blocked roads, burning tyres and hundreds of children in the... [Lire la suite]
