It's raining.

Tropical rain isn't anything like European rain. It's not cold, for a start, there's none of that freezing drizzle that bites into your skin and makes you huddle inside your anorak. You can go out in the rain here and actually stay under it for as long as you wish, it really isn't cold. The cold comes if there's wind, or if you come into an air-conditioned room once you're soaking wet. Because soaking wet you inevitably become. There aren't stages of rain here, going... Things students say...

I was happily teaching my students all about various states, cities, monuments and cultures of the United States of America. Then I gave them a test... and as usual, I didn't recognize my original lesson at all. I have now learnt that... Per year, Yellowe Stone Park gets 3 333 949 326 visitors. Independence Day is 19776. Children start school in America at the age 1961. The death penalty is 4 Junuary 1 (so I assume they save everybody up in a prison and... [Lire la suite]

Hot Blushes

I started drama lessons with the kids this afternoon. The first task was an improvisation sketch in small groups: you have just received an anonymous Valentine's card. How do you react? One girl beckoned me over and said: "Miss, I can't do this." "Why not?" "Because I'm black." "What does that have to do with anything?" "Well, miss, I want to blush and I can't!"

Right. Where do I start?

I am frequently asked what my students' level of English is like. It is, after all, their third language after Shimaorese and French... and it's not as though they speak the first two properly. English is very difficult for most of the kids. Their fluency falls into several categories. Underneath, you will find examples from a test on both, neither and whereas where they had to compare two singers and from a test on food where they had to compare healthy... [Lire la suite]

Rich gentlemen have it, boys!

On the last day of school, my class - MY class, the one I'm the main teacher of, the one I theoretically have the power of life and death over (or at least a say in what happens to them next year) - seemed rather excited. So did everybody. The holidays were to start in four hours, after all. They chatted to each other, both to their neighbours and across the room, got up and down, refused to sit in their places and seemed somewhat disinclined to calm down. ... [Lire la suite]

Things pupils say.

I love it when... I love it when my pupils can't quite speak properly, but they try anyway. Faced with a picture of a baby learning to walk, they say: "She is learning to go". Brilliant. Sometimes, this turns into rather long-winded explanations because they don't know the exact English word and are determined to manage with the vocabulary they have, for example "the machine where we put the clothes wash and who turn the powder and the water... Let the Teacher do the Work

Recently, I've been taking my kids into the computer room. For a start, there are 15 computers, 4 of which don't work but which all the kids absolutely want to try anyway, "I'm sure I can make it work, Miss". Of course, they can't, so we all get frustrated.        Instruction n°1 : Switch the PC on. "Miss, what's a PC?" "A computer." "Miss, I haven't got a username or password, last year's don't work." "That's OK, use the ones on the board." ... [Lire la suite]

Sea's out.

Last weekend, yet another beautiful day, how tiring ;). School has been back for three weeks, so like every other teacher on the island, we went to the beach. At low tide. Very low tide. So low that we could actually walk right up to the coral reef drop-off, the part where the coral suddenly falls away and you can see a lot of coral and fish. A little hard under the feet, because there were bits of coral and various assorted rocks everywhere, it was a case of finding the least pointy bits to walk on, but... [Lire la suite]

Drama Queens

The end of the school year was on Friday, June 22nd, at twelve o'clock. For a while, a French teacher called Salima and I had been preparing a short drama show with the same class, each of us blithely unknowing of what the other was doing. It was one of the kids who told each one of us what they were doing with the other, so we got together and worked out - albeit at the last minute - a three-quarters-of-an-hour-long show for the class, which would be repeated four times on the... Present and Perfect.

I'm teaching my Year 10s the meaning of already and yet at the moment. In order to accomplish said feat, I asked them questions and got them to talk to each other about what they'd already done or not yet done that morning. Their morning activities aren't quite the same as European kids' activities...          I have already caught a rooster this morning I haven't made a cake yet. I have already cleaned the floor. I have already... [Lire la suite]
