UNICEF Heroes Day

              Yesterday was UNICEF Heroes Day: a worldwide, running-applications-and-various-other-gadgets-connected run whose goal was to raise money to vaccinate children. The idea was to get everybody to run 10 kilometres and connect via various running or fitness-based apps, GPS watches or whatever to the UNICEF Heroes website, thereby tracking all their practice and the run itself. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

                                Rules for the Tyre Race. Wear the official Tyre Race t-shirt while racing. Collect one number sign per team the week before the race. This number sign will be necessary to collect the remaining number signs for each team. Without the first number sign, the team will not be able to race. Practising for the Grand Tyre Race

         About two weeks ago, the lady in charge of the Bretons of Mayotte Association sent a collective e-mail out, asking for people to become "ambassadors" for the tyre race which was to take place on the 29th of June. I responded, asking what would be involved, and she obviously transferred my e-mail on to the guy in charge of the Breton tyre-racing team because the next thing I knew, I was told that the only difficult thing about the race would be running with your arms together to hold the tyre... Tyred flat out.

                  On Saturday, there was the Grand Tyre Race in Mamoudzou. Hundreds of people had come to race and to watch, as this is THE big event of the year in Mayotte. The idea is to race for 2.2km through the capital city, driving a used tyre in front of oneself by means of two sticks. In order to propel the tyre forward, the ends of the sticks are fitted inside the tyre - sometimes just lodged between the walls of the tyre, sometimes stuck in a yoghurt pot to keep them together -...
