Mamoudzou By Night

I was sent on an espionage mission the other day. A friend of mine suspected his wife of cheating on him, and had asked me to go to a Senegalese party which she was planning to attend in order to check if the new boyfriend was there. When I got there, there was a jazz quartet in full flow. I already knew two of them and... [Lire la suite]

Lille

Two British Rail trains, four Underground trains and two Eurostar trains. I don't mind travelling, really. I'm not keen on all the waiting around that has to be done in airports and train stations, and I'd rather not have to justify my identity and defend my presence every ten seconds, but the actual act of travelling - the sitting down, eating, reading, playing silly games or watching incomprehensible films - is fine. I also very much enjoy the arrival at... [Lire la suite]

Rain at School

It's been raining quite a bit recently. This is the effect of all this rain on my school: quite impressive, actually. Everything and everyone gets soaked five minutes in, the kids go swimming in the puddles, bags and books included, and you can't hear a thing because of the water pounding down on the corrugated iron roof. Even falling on concrete, rain is very noisy stuff, and when there's that much of it, you truly and... [Lire la suite]

Raindrops aren't falling. Period.

The only existing postcard of Mayotte during the rainy season.                         The rainy season has just started. Just. As in two days ago. This is worrying the meteorologists.          You see, Mayotte usually gets two lots of rain. A small spell, which usually comes some time in October and lasts for a week or two, and is known as the "Pluie des Mangues", or mango rain. This is because it hails the beginning of the mango season. And... [Lire la suite]

The Malagasy Highway Code

The Malagasy Highway Code for Motorbikers           When you see a lorry coming your way, take a big breath and hold it. It's going to stink.         A full helmet is great for safety if you fall and hit your head, but it does mean you can't scratch your ears.              Even after 1500 kilometres of practice, you still can't scratch your ears. Stop trying, you're in the middle of the road.          You'll... [Lire la suite]

Hellen

The weather was pretty grotty this weekend, so I haven't been out much. In fact, Mayotte was placed under "strong rain warning" on Thursday evening, because a depression was forming in the Mozambique channel, along the coast of Mozambique.  On Saturday morning, the depression turned into a tropical storm and was christened Hellen. Strong winds and rather a lot of rain came thundering down on the north-eastern side of the island, causing trees to topple over... [Lire la suite]

The rain in Mamoudzou falls down, soaks the road and makes big potholes.

We're slowly getting towards the end of the rainy season. It's been raining pretty much every day, but not all day though, just an hour or two at a time. The rain has - as usual - dug gaping holes in the roads, it's a right mess. Some of the roads I take every day have now reached the state where you can't actually drive on them any more. You swerve all over the place, as you physically cannot drive in a straight line on these roads, and you play bumper cars too, because when one... [Lire la suite]

Going Swimming At School

The rainy season in in full flow now. This is a short video taken by one of my colleagues at school, a day when 9.2mm of rain fell in two hours accompanied by a pounding thunderstorm that made the headmistress decide to cut off the school's electricity because it was getting too dangerous. There are a lot of electric sockets very close to the ground, and most of our electrical wiring isn't protected by anything. As soon as it started raining, the kids ran screaming and shouting into the nearest... [Lire la suite]

It's raining.

Tropical rain isn't anything like European rain. It's not cold, for a start, there's none of that freezing drizzle that bites into your skin and makes you huddle inside your anorak. You can go out in the rain here and actually stay under it for as long as you wish, it really isn't cold. The cold comes if there's wind, or if you come into an air-conditioned room once you're soaking wet. Because soaking wet you inevitably become. There aren't stages of rain here, going... What's the weather like?

The rainy season is over now, and the wind is just starting up. It's still hot though, and will remain so until next November, at which point it will get slightly hotter. It's slightly more breathable now, however. These screenshots are from my Windows weather application on the computer. They show the temperature in Mamoudzou, Poitiers and Dorchester. It makes for interesting comparisons, especially first thing in the... [Lire la suite]
