Raindrops aren't falling. Period.

The only existing postcard of Mayotte during the rainy season.                         The rainy season has just started. Just. As in two days ago. This is worrying the meteorologists.          You see, Mayotte usually gets two lots of rain. A small spell, which usually comes some time in October and lasts for a week or two, and is known as the "Pluie des Mangues", or mango rain. This is because it hails the beginning of the mango season. And... [Lire la suite]

Réunion mon amour, part 2 of 2.

We spent a total of four days and three nights in Mafate. There are no roads, the area is only accessible on foot or by helicopter. The name comes from a wizard who used to live in the cirque, and whose speciality was killing people, using just a piece of the person's hair to enchant them.          A series of rather interesting postcards has been released recently. They're all drawings of scenes in Mayotte. My favourite is the one above, as it's a mixture of two scenes I come across very regularly. Scooters here aren't just a quick way of getting from point A to point B. They're a fully-fledged means of transport for both people and merchandise. It's not rare to see scooters with not only two people, sometimes three, but also a huge sack of rice, a full bunch of bananas or a cubic metre of... [Lire la suite]

Christmas Market

There was a Christmas market today in front of the M’biwi Café, just down the road from us. I thought a Christmas market by 32°C sounded interesting, so I went along after work to see what sort of things were up for sale.                              The first thing that struck me was the bright and colourful aspect of it all. The... [Lire la suite]

The Dark Side of Mayotte

Most of the time, Mayotte is postcard-pretty and the people are lovely. But it isn't "home" yet. It’s not that I don’t like coconut trees and papaya fruit, having the lagoon just next door and going to school on a scooter. I do. But some things take a bit of getting used to.                         It’s pretty here, but it’s so poor and dirty. Most people live... [Lire la suite]
