Dictée Bolé

This weekend, I took part in a quintessentially French way of spending a fun Saturday afternoon. As part of the Language Week, a local association had organized a Grand Dictation in order to promote language awareness among schoolchildren and adults. In the morning, the schoolkids had their... Transfer time.

It's transfer time. The server opened yesterday, so I've been busy choosing where I want to go next year. Not that I actually get an awful lot of say in the matter, but I do get a chance to express my wishes, if in vain most of the time. In French education and civil servancy in general, transfers are based on a points system. You get points for staying for chunks of four years in the same school, as they don't like it when you move around too much. You get points for being... [Lire la suite]

Labattoir

The 11th of November was Armistice Day. A bank holiday. I'd been looking forward to sleeping in and having a nice lazy day, knowing I would be playing bridge in the evening and that I had a bit of marking to do. A colleague of mine, however, didn't quite see it that way. He had invited two kids per class to come to the Armistice Ceremony, celebrated on the small island at 8.30, and... [Lire la suite]

Salon du Tourisme

A few photos from the Salon du Tourisme which took place this weekend. Mayotte is involoved in several programs such as the Vanilla Islands Program, there's one about the Indian Ocean as well... the general idea is to try and convince tourists that Mayotte is a nice place to spend a holiday. Unfortunately, this point of view is not shared by most of the population. Most white expats would like to turn Mayotte... [Lire la suite]

Dancing Nyota

There's been a folk-dancing workshop for the last few years here. It started the year I arrived in Mayotte, and was under the name of the Bretons de Mayotte association. Now, it's led by a man who has lived all over France, travelled all over Africa, speaks eighteen languages such as Indonesian, Malagasy, Bislama, Dioula, Wolof, Mandarin Chinese, Tamil, Fulfulde and Quechua along with English, French, Italian and Portuguese, and who seems able to do anything from plaiting leaves to make... Thank You For A Lovely Christmas Holiday.

Family photos. A lovely Christmas was had by all. Lots of people, lots of presents, lots of games, lots of tablet computers. At one point, there were seven of us playing silly games on our various tablets while watching a film. Lots of food, too. A month's holiday, almost completely spent away from Mayotte. As had obviously done a good number of my colleagues: it seemed as though half the school, including the head, was in the same plane on the way back. It gave us all someone to talk to while waiting... [Lire la suite]

Dramatic

For the last six months, three colleagues and I have been doing a drama workshop with the kids at school. I filed it as a "school project" at the end of last year, so the Vice-Rectorate (high education authority) gave the school a grant of seven hundred euros to "promote culture in schools". Only one rule: the theme was to be "Culture and History of Mayotte". We therefore asked the kids to produce scenes of their own invention, as they were necessarily going to act scenes of their everyday life, which is... [Lire la suite]

Drama Queens

The end of the school year was on Friday, June 22nd, at twelve o'clock. For a while, a French teacher called Salima and I had been preparing a short drama show with the same class, each of us blithely unknowing of what the other was doing. It was one of the kids who told each one of us what they were doing with the other, so we got together and worked out - albeit at the last minute - a three-quarters-of-an-hour-long show for the class, which would be repeated four times on the...
