Kwahéri Maoré

When I arrived at my Mahorese school, I met several teachers who were in their last year in Mayotte. And universally, they told me that when you're in your last year, you're already at your destination in your mind. One, named Henri Denglades, was going back to his native French Guyana at the end of that school year. From September until the end of the year, he was mentally already there, thinking about how he would see his family again and reclaim his house. Every month of his last school year,... A Family Christmas

This year, the Cooper Christmas commenced, continued and ceased in a rather categorical fashion.              We had moments of present-giving and new clothes...                                Smiles and silly hats...                           Moments of intense concentration... ... Alefa Madagascar! Part 1 of 2.

I enjoyed hiking in Reunion Island and liked the country very much, it has an interesting history and it's extremely beautiful. However, I don't think I'll be back, unless I can manage to get a transfer to live and work there. Madagascar, though, was a different kettle of fish. I fell in love with the place when I went there for the first time in May this year, to the point that the day after I got back, I had already booked my next flight to Antananarivo. The first time had been a... [Lire la suite]

Thank You For A Lovely Christmas Holiday.

Family photos. A lovely Christmas was had by all. Lots of people, lots of presents, lots of games, lots of tablet computers. At one point, there were seven of us playing silly games on our various tablets while watching a film. Lots of food, too. A month's holiday, almost completely spent away from Mayotte. As had obviously done a good number of my colleagues: it seemed as though half the school, including the head, was in the same plane on the way back. It gave us all someone to talk to while waiting... [Lire la suite]

Going to the Circus

The Cirque de Paris has been in Mamoudzou for the last few weeks, and is staying until the 17th of February. The circus tent is planted in the main square of the capital city, with a large Coca-Cola tent in front and the market to the left. Behind is the Tourism Committee building, pink and lavishly decorated with various graffiti. The circus tent, performers and props arrived by container or plane. When the circus opened for its first showing, the organisers were rather disappointed. Kids... [Lire la suite]

Happy New Year to all

P and I spent Christmas and New Year with my favourite people this year. When I got back, I was invited to a friend’s birthday party, where I was informed that I must be crazy to voluntarily spend any length of time in such a cold place when I live in such a warm place. Go back in the summer, by all means, they said, but not in the winter. I actually liked it though. First of all, seeing the family. Secondly, fetching and buying things in France and England in...
