Brussel

The original plan was to spend New Year's Eve in Brussels with a friend of H's. However, they hadn't managed to contact each other in time, and she was working that day, so we went up on New Year's Day, a public holiday, without warning the friend beforehand. Brussels is about an hour's drive from Lille, very easily done. H called his friend when we arrived in the city, she got herself ready, we parked in front of her flat and the three of us went off to discover... [Lire la suite]

Alefa Madagascar! Part 1 of 2.

I enjoyed hiking in Reunion Island and liked the country very much, it has an interesting history and it's extremely beautiful. However, I don't think I'll be back, unless I can manage to get a transfer to live and work there. Madagascar, though, was a different kettle of fish. I fell in love with the place when I went there for the first time in May this year, to the point that the day after I got back, I had already booked my next flight to Antananarivo. The first time had been a... [Lire la suite]

Majicavo

The village I live in is called Majicavo. Literally, it means "where there is no water". Like all Mahorese villages, it's a very poor place, but near enough to the capital (Mamoudzou) for people to want to be modern and Westernized. Also like all Mahorese villages, it has a lot of shops, known as doukas, and small local restaurants, called brochetti or brochetterie because they sell mainly chicken wings and kebabs of meat or fish. They have names such as "Welcome Mayotte", "Mastéréhi" ("Enjoy your meal and be at rest"),... [Lire la suite]

Hey to the Ferry.

P came over during my half-term holidays to spend a week in Mayotte with me. During that week, we played a lot of music and we ate out several times. It was on one of these times that something rather interesting happened. The restaurant we wanted to go to was on the small island, and my flat is on the big island. So far all was well, we bought a couple of ferry tickets (there are ferries across the water every half hour, the trip takes about twenty minutes) and got on the ferry. The problem was... Consuegra

South of Madrid lies Consuegra, where Don Quijote's windmills stand on a ridge. Twelve windmills, some of them broken, allegedly by Don Quijote himself. Spain is obsessed with Don Quijote, as there are picture and sculptures everywhere, every village has a bar or restaurant named after either the character or the author, and Cervantès' birthplace in Alcalá de Henares is a widely-visited tourist spot.            ... Bigfruit

I just thought I'd show you the rather large papaya I bought at the market in Coconi this morning. It measures 42 cm, the size of a smallish baby, and it's about the same weight at 3.3kg. It's not ripe yet, but you're welcome to come and share it in a few days!

When in Spain...

I went to Madrid during the half-term holidays to visit P, who was transferred there for his job last December. I'd never been to the capital city before, so that was a very interesting experience. On top of trying to speak Spanish, I learnt a few things we weren't taught at school; namely that...            ...people queue halfway along the street to buy espadrilles              ...restaurants offer... Sea's out.

Last weekend, yet another beautiful day, how tiring ;). School has been back for three weeks, so like every other teacher on the island, we went to the beach. At low tide. Very low tide. So low that we could actually walk right up to the coral reef drop-off, the part where the coral suddenly falls away and you can see a lot of coral and fish. A little hard under the feet, because there were bits of coral and various assorted rocks everywhere, it was a case of finding the least pointy bits to walk on, but... [Lire la suite]

Radio Tour de l'Île ! Infos, quizz, musique, fun !

Over the Pentecost week-end, a friend of ours was participating in the Tour de l'Île, a sailing boat tour of the larger of Mayotte's two islands. He told us that he does this every year, and that he usually ends up being the only one playing music on the beach, so would we like to come and accompany him with another two instruments? Yes please.              Our skipper was our musician friend Franck, who plays the accordion in our... [Lire la suite]
