Hellen

                 The weather was pretty grotty this weekend, so I haven't been out much. In fact, Mayotte was placed under "strong rain warning" on Thursday evening, because a depression was forming in the Mozambique channel, along the coast of Mozambique.  On Saturday morning, the depression turned into a tropical storm and was christened Hellen. Hey to the Ferry.

          P came over during my half-term holidays to spend a week in Mayotte with me. During that week, we played a lot of music and we ate out several times. It was on one of these times that something rather interesting happened. The restaurant we wanted to go to was on the small island, and my flat is on the big island. So far all was well, we bought a couple of ferry tickets (there are ferries across the water every half hour, the trip takes about twenty minutes) and got on the ferry. The problem was... Please do not spit in the hospital. Thank you.

               We went on a boat trip the other day with our friend Franck and a friend of his, a doctor named Brigitte. We now know that... The most wide-spread illnesses in Mayotte are high blood pressure and diabetes. However, the women may be fat, they never suffer from varicose veins. In Mayotte, the women carry anything that needs carrying (boxes, shopping baskets...) on their heads. This leads to strong straight spines and heads held high, no spine deformations originating... Numbers

          Mayotte, Maoré or Jazirat al Mawet (the Island of Death - very reassuring) is the 101st French department, as from May 2011. It's a collection of several small islands in the Indian Ocean, north of Madagascar. Its total population is 209 530 mostly spread over two main islands, "Petite Terre" and "Grande Terre".
