N'Gouja, probably for the last time.

It's the holidays next week, so this weekend was really the last one before the holidays on which to go to the beach. I don't go that often - not really interested in lying around in the heat, and not bothered about salty water and small fish - but H loves the beach, and I'd promised to bring him back some sand from his favourite beach in Mayotte. So I rang up a colleague who... [Lire la suite]

It's a beautiful place, really.

There have been a couple of rather pretty-pretty series of photos of Mayotte around recently. Two projects, in fact. The first was the Vanilla Islands project: an effort to put forward Mayotte, Reunion and the Seychelles on the touristic scene. We did actually have a visit from a cruise-boat full of American tourists. The photos of their arrival were all over the newspapers, so exceptional was this. No more news filtered out, so we never learnt what happened to... [Lire la suite]

There haven't been any underwater photos for a while.

On Easter Sunday, I went out on a boat trip with the Bretons of Mayotte association. Dragged a friend along, too, and there also happened to be a couple of folk dancers on the same boat. We went to the north of Mayotte to look for dolphins and possibly manta rays. Found a few dolphins - not the usual few hundreds, just ten or so - and watched them for a bit, then we stopped off at the Îlots Choisil for lunch.                ... [Lire la suite]

Manta rays and Mangroves

Last Sunday, I went on a boat trip with the Association of Bretons of Mayotte. They're the ones I play music with, they organize an activity every month so I try to go along when I can to get out of the house and to talk with people over four feet tall who don't talk back. This month's activity was a boat trip into the lagoon, the idea being to go and watch the dolphins and to see if we could find a manta ray. The rays come into the lagoon in March and stay... Makis and Turtles

While P was here, we went down to the south of the island to one of the most beautiful (and most touristic, unfortunately) beaches in Mayotte: N'Gouja. Twice. The first time was during the school holidays, the second time was on the Monday when everybody went back to school... and as I don't work on Mondays, we thought the beach wouldn't be too full. It was almost empty, which was nice because most of the time, there are so many people there that you can tell where the turtles are by looking for the... [Lire la suite]

High tide and low fish

The other day, a friend of mine - Mireille, the one I went to the circus with - and I went to the beach. It wasn't a particularly fine day, and the tide was high, but we tried to go to the drop-off anyway and see what we could find.                           We didn't find very much, actually. There was the same quantity of coral and the same number of fish as there always is, but it appears that high tide really... [Lire la suite]

Glass-bottomed boats make the world go round

There are several companies which offer boat trips in and around the lagoon, generally to see whales and dolphins. We'd heard of one which had a boat with a glass bottom, so we put our names down and took our friends out in that for the day.                         We went over coral reefs, we ate local food on a beach called the Prefect's Beach, or plage du préfet, we went to see a... Turtling

We've had friends from France over this week. This is the first time people have come into my flat to stay, but everything went well. After taking them to a beach near our flat for starters, we went to N'Gouja beach to go turtle-hunting. N'Gouja is about an hour's drive from the flat, it's the main "white beach" of Mayotte. Almost everybody is white and armed with a mask, tuba and flippers. The beach itself is well-known for its turtles,... [Lire la suite]

Sea's out.

Last weekend, yet another beautiful day, how tiring ;). School has been back for three weeks, so like every other teacher on the island, we went to the beach. At low tide. Very low tide. So low that we could actually walk right up to the coral reef drop-off, the part where the coral suddenly falls away and you can see a lot of coral and fish. A little hard under the feet, because there were bits of coral and various assorted rocks everywhere, it was a case of finding the least pointy bits to walk on, but... [Lire la suite]

Water, water everywhere...

I got a call the other day from a girl I’d met at a friend’s birthday party, asking me if I wanted to do something on Sunday. The search was on. She rang me back yesterday evening, having thought of going to the beach, renting a kayak, paddling round a pretty island and fish-watching on the coral reef afterwards. I picked her up this morning and we were off.               ... [Lire la suite]
