Voulé à Musicale Plage

I was invited to a company voulé the other day, a barbecue on the beach with the company I work with giving English lessons to adults. The rainy season is reaching its end now, but there are still some strong bursts of rain occasionally, and I was caught in one of these on the way to the barbecue. Not too promising, but it brightened up as I got closer to the beach in the south of the island. It was a chance to talk to some of the guys in the training company... [Lire la suite]

The Nutrition Transition

A rather interesting article turned up in the newspaper this week. Mayotte has been in the middle of a nutritional transition (poetically put) for quite a few years now. From not having enough to eat and suffering from various lacks and deficiencies, the Mahorese people now tend towards something called metabolic pathologies, said the article. In Mayotte, food is generally associated with conviviality and hospitality. There's none of the eat-on-the-go style of doing things: a Mahorese... [Lire la suite]

Chicken wings again

Mayotte is a French department and therefore receives all the French adverts. The TV adverts stay exactly the same, advertising things that haven't made it as far as Mayotte yet, but the paper adverts are tailored to local taste, one might say. You might remember the Ramadan adverts I put on the blog a few months ago. The one above is a current ad by the Orange phone company for a new phone plan. Its slogan is "Pay less, that's more chicken wings".

Population Study episode 1 : Bouénis

Bouéni means "madam" in Shimaoré. It's the name given to all married women, or those who look old enough to be married. It's more than a name, though, it's a way of life.                 Bouénis are the ones who have all the power in Mahorese societies. They're the ones who own the houses, do the shopping, look after the children, work at the markets, they're the ones you see most of, with their brightly-coloured salouvas and sparkly tops.... Hot country, cold chain.

This singularly appetizing photo is of several cardboard boxes of mabawas - chicken wings again. What the photo doesn't show is the large yellow and red sign just above the food, saying "DO NOT OPEN THE BOXES". Written in French, which most people here understand. Obviously not all - either that, or they don't care, or they don't realize the importance of the cold chain.                Cold chain hassle is pretty much a... [Lire la suite]

My Granddaughter Went To Market And She Bought...

We went to the market the other day. The big, covered market in the Place de la République in Mamoudzou. We'd never gone inside before, never really gathered that there was actually something in there, just seen the big pink building from the outside. It's joined to the tourist office, which is also pink. The covered market opened in 2009 and was welcomed as a godsend by the street sellers, supreme recognition of their jobs. The building stretches... [Lire la suite]

The Gold Rush

Things have been a little complicated recently. First, the strikes started because of the cost of living here. For example : 4.20€ for a 1kg packet of rice, 2.83€ for three large potatoes and 3.50€ for a packet of butter. "Essential" products here are chicken wings, rice, sand, bottled gas, meat and milk. These were the strikes with blocked roads, burning tyres and hundreds of children in the... [Lire la suite]
