Miss Mayotte

                      A few weeks ago, Mayotte 1ère, the department's main news and silly programme channel, held the Miss Mayotte for Miss France elections and narrowed the candidates down to five. The five almost-winners have been going round Mayotte showing themselves off recently, in places such as the swimming pool (there's only one, anyway) and the hairdresser's down the road from our flat. Bouéni Jolie

              You often see girls and women here with m’zindzano on their faces. It’s a beauty mask made from sandalwood ground on a pure coral table, mixed with a little water. The table is made of one piece of coral, and often weighs 3 or 4 kilograms. It is the fine grain of the coral which makes the sandalwood powder fine and fluid, but they also use dried leaves and flowers, especially myongo, a stick which comes out of the central stalk of a palm leaf. Playing dress-up

          I went to the Mayotte M'Gombani Fashion Salon today, as you can probably see from the photos. Different creators were holding stands with their various wares: trousers and tops, colourful dresses, earrings, necklaces, oven mitts (rather the odd one out), one stand of local food and one of beauty products. Beauty products here are henna and m'dzindzano. Henna is used to decorate girls' hands and to dye hair, and m'dzindzano is the local beauty mask. It's made of sandalwood... [Lire la suite]
