The Fashion Salon

The Fashion Salon was last weekend. Not usually the type of event I go for, but there are few enough events of any sort in Mayotte for me to try and go to the ones there are. On Saturday evening, there was the fashion show and competition. Every year, they organize a competition around one particular type of material. Two years ago, it was Mahorese chiromani, a type of material often worn by ladies here. Last year, it was jute.... [Lire la suite]

The Gesture Festival

I'm a member of a community called Couchsurfing. The idea is to put up travellers and backpackers on your couch for a night or two, show them around a bit and make their stay more interesting than if they were in a hotel room on their own. It also works the other way round: you can "request a couch" wherever your next destination is. You tell the person when you will be arriving, they have a look at your "couchsurfing profile" and decide whether they want to put you up or not. There are usually... [Lire la suite]

Salon du Tourisme

A few photos from the Salon du Tourisme which took place this weekend. Mayotte is involoved in several programs such as the Vanilla Islands Program, there's one about the Indian Ocean as well... the general idea is to try and convince tourists that Mayotte is a nice place to spend a holiday. Unfortunately, this point of view is not shared by most of the population. Most white expats would like to turn Mayotte... [Lire la suite]

Mayotte has a brand new airport.

Above, the old airport arrival hall. Three hundred people in a very small space with a small conveyor belt, and one or two men in the middle of the conveyor belt, pushing the bags together in order to fit more bags on the belt. You see, the belt would quickly become full up, and the owners of the offending luggage would always arrive last. A couple of fans in the middle of the ceiling would distribute the bad spent-the-night-in-the-plane-and-could-do-with-a-shower smells as evenly as... [Lire la suite]

Hiking around Saziley

Sunday was a rather hectic day. First, it was the day two of the musicians from the Blue Mango were leaving Mayotte, one forever, the other for a holiday. The one who was leaving forever hadn't been able to come to our last going-away party and I had a present for her, so that needed delivering. The one who was going back to France on holiday knew I was going to Madagascar again in August and wanted me to deliver a package to his wife's nephew in Antsirabe, south of Antananarivo. The... HLM

This is a Mahorese multi-storey building. There seems to be just one on the island. I don't think anyone actually lives there: I see it as more of an attraction than anything else, for the following reason. A sign in front explains that photographs cost five euros.

Graffiti in M'Gombani

These are the resulting photos of my graffiti project around M'Gombani, a small village to the south of Mamoudzou. I took photos like these around three villages in total. The idea was to show my kids the difference between artistic graffiti, street art and plain vandalism. I didn't get to do that lesson plan with them this year, but I'll keep it on the back burner for next year. I like the idea and I'm sure there should be something interesting to... [Lire la suite]

Les Bigoudènes En Folie

It's tyre-racing time.  The Bretons of Mayotte have two teams, one all-female, one all-male. The leader of the Bretons works in the police station and usually manages to rope in a team of policemen/women. He'd managed it last year, and had seemed to manage it this year as well. He'd asked me if I wanted to take part again, and I'd said yes please, and I have a friend who'd like to run as well. He therefore left two spaces in... [Lire la suite]

Music

I've been playing quite a bit of music recently.                  On May 31st, I was roped in to play "film music", which was a new one for me. Mostly cartoon themes such as Some Day My Prince Will Come, Popeye or The Bare Necessities, but the odd tune from films such as The Sting or Black Cat White Cat. The idea was to videoproject extracts from films and cartoons, and play the theme tunes live at the same time. This required quite a... [Lire la suite]

Super-Car

There are lots of cars in Mayotte, many more than the roads can provide for in terms of capacity and maintenance. But one is above all. One car to rule them all. One car to find them. One car to bring them all and in the potholes bind them. In the land of Mayotte where the flags and doll-heads lie.                          Apparently a long time ago, before most of the ornaments were added. Still worth remarking he... [Lire la suite]
